Art on Gourds
Gourds have been used as natural containers, serving pieces, and storage vessels since prehistoric times. Once dried and cleaned, the shell of the gourd is tough and durable, yet accepts many decorative applications.
My selection of gourd art usually consists of containers of all sizes, vases, masks, and sculptural mixed media pieces. Some are functional, and some are purely decorative.
I begin each piece of gourd art by first drawing the design in pencil on the surface of a gourd that I have scraped and cleaned. From that point, I may pyroengrave,
carve and paint, and add paper mache, beads, wire, and wood embellishments.
The Process page contains step-by-step information on how I prepare most gourds to become gourd art.
